History of kaga Yubinuki
= A craft behind AT bijoux =
Where it is from
AT bijoux is created using the traditional craft originated in Kaga region of Japan. Kaga is the old name for modern day Kanazawa, which resides in Ishikawa prefecture (2.5 hours away from Tokyo via bulle train).
During the Edo period (17th-19th century), this region flourished as a castle city, renowned for its pottery, green tea, and many other crafts - but especially known for its kimono makings.
What is Kaga Yubinuki?
During the Edo period, seamstresses of kimono makers used to repurpose/upcycle remnants of silk threads. They took leftover silk threads and hand stitched their own thimbles . These hand-stitched silk thimbles were surprisingly sturdy and long lasting, plus less damaging to silk fabric.
These handmade thimnbles became known as Kaga Yubinuki (Yubinuki means thimbles in Japanese).
Hundreds of variations
The various designs and their stitching techniques to make Kaga Yubinuki have been passed down for generations to generations.
These thimbles were not only used for sewing but also often kept and cherished as heirlooms among families.
